FoodDrinkEurope has taken a new step in the fight against food waste, together with FEBA (European Federation of Food Banks) and EuroCommerce, by launching in June a new guide to encourage and make it easier for food manufacturers and retailers to donate their food surpluses to food banks.
The ‘Every Meal Matters’ initiative was launched during a breakfast roundtable discussion in Brussels, where FoodDrinkEurope, represented by C. Hood, President of Kellogg Europe and FoodDrinkEurope Board member, together with representatives from the European Commission (DG SANTE), retailers and food banks, as well as charity organisations that benefit from food donations joined the conversation on food donation as the best way forward when it comes to redistribution of edible food surplus. The catering at the breakfast was based on food products strictly similar to those actually donated to food banks.
The breakfast launch was followed by a visit to the Brussels food bank to learn how food & drink companies implement food donation. H. Gschwindt, representing the Brussels food bank, gave a thorough tour to all the attendees and explained how donation helps food banks help people in need.
